Spaying and Neutering Your Pet

Neutering the male dog or cat (Orchidectomy):

  • Recommended at 6.5 months of age
  • Neutering prevents prostatic tumours and prostatic enlargement
  • Reduces mounting behaviour and roaming
  • Reduces territorial marking (spraying or urinating on vertical objects)
  • May reduce aggressive behaviour
Spaying the female dog or cat (Ovariohysterectomy):

  • Recommended at 6.5 months of age
  • Eliminates unwanted pregnancies and behaviour associated with “heat” cycles
  • Eliminates the risk of life-threatening uterine infections (pyometra)
  • Greatly reduces the risk of mammary tumours (breast cancer)
